Our Pine Plank Flooring

I have had so many questions and comments about my flooring I will attempt to answer them all here!

The previous owner of our home installed pine planks on the entire main floor, so, YES I have a lot of  it.  When we were looking at the house I was worried about the floors mainly because I didn't know anything about it, however I loved the distressed look and the charm it added to the home.

We have now been in our home for 3 years and I still really like my pine planks.

Like anything else there are also pro's and con's.

The great thing about pine flooring is it is supposed to look distressed and worn, I don't have to worry about my kids scratching or dinging it (I have been known to let my 5 year old rollerblade in the house)  Pine is a soft wood causing it to ding much easier than a harder wood like oak.  And believe me there are many dings and scratches in my floor, but they just add character.

The major down side is pine planks are not designed to fit together seamlessly, leaving cracks in between each board.  Our flooring is tongue and groove which allows some of them to fit together tight, but others still have larger gaps allowing crumbles fall down in them.  However most of them can be vacuumed out without much effort.

We liked the flooring so much on our main floor we installed it in our Master Bedroom.   Pine Planks are fairly easy to install as they are tongue and groove, it is just time consuming, if you are looking to tackle this job allow yourself at least a weekend.  I used a finish nail gun with 2 inch nails, I didn't fill any of the holes as I liked the added character it brought to the planks.

My floor is stained with Early American by Miniwax and it is sealed with a polyurethane.

A few more pictures of the flooring in each room......

  3. so you just went with random unevenness rather than sanding all even? Any problems with things caching on them. This is the only reason I haven't done this. I was afraid floor would be to uneven and I don't want to sand. Thanks!
