Tuesday's Tip: Painted Drawers

Old furniture often has it's own imperfections, some things are considered character and others well are kind of gross. For Example the inside of a drawer that has had who knows what in it?!

I have an easy solution for you!
Paint your drawers, and if you want to go a bit further add a little character to them, like stripes!  Instead of an ugly disgusting drawer you now have a new drawer full of character!

It is PINK and FRENCH!!!

I originally bought this desk for myself, when I got it home and measured it for the area I wanted it to go in…it wouldn't fit.  It has sat and sat in my garage as I tired and tired to find a place for it and I failed.  I am so torn about selling this piece.  I LOVE it!  My mom even said it was her FAVORITE piece yet, and she doesn't always love painted furniture.
I guess I can't put it off any longer…so here she is….isn't she BEAUTIFUL!!!

Here is a reminder of what it looked like before….

Furniture and Paint Party #20

I can't believe it is time for this party already!  It seems like time is just flying by, it is almost Halloween and then the whirlwind of Holidays begins!  Although I do have to admit, I slightly like feeling out of control, for some odd reason my life can't be complete without having more on my plate than I can get through.  I may complain at times, more out of exhaustion, but it seems to keep my brain going and I love the sense of accomplishment!  Am I just crazy or what?!

Here is my Paint Project for the week,
A Beautiful Painted dresser and for a CUTE little girls!
I love the color she chose, it is always fun to experiment with bright colors every now and again!

Tuesday's Tip: How much SHINE do you want!?

I am a Latex Girl!
I have tried chalk paint and a few other specialty paints and while they are lots of fun to paint with,
I love the durability of Latex.
With latex you have a few more color choices and SHEEN choices.
Choosing the right SHEEN for your project is very important, it can determine the look of a piece.

If you are wanting a really shiny piece of furniture and you plan to paint it on and leave it I would go with a Semi-Gloss or Gloss.  As it will give you a beautiful finish and it cleans up great.  I don't seal my furniture with a top coat when I am painting with a Gloss.

If you are wanting to distress your piece of furniture I would not go with a Semi-Gloss or Gloss for a few reasons:
1-the glossier the paint the more it balls up with distressing
2-you will see all your sanding marks
3-when applying a glaze it does not sink into the paint as well

When I paint a piece to distress I go with Eggshell or flat.  I like how they sand and when rubbing on a glaze it will slightly sink into the paint.  I do however like my furniture to have a slight shine to it so I seal it with a Satin or Gloss Top Coat.
There are flat or Eggshell top coats as well if you don't want a shine at all!

For this Blue Desk I used an Eggshell Latex with a Gloss Top Coat for the added shine
(the top photo I used an Eggshell Latex Paint with a Satin Top Coat)

A Little Witchy!

A few of my friends and I went to a Witch Festival last weekend.
I am not always great at setting aside time to spend with just the girls, but I am so glad I let them talk me into going!  I seem to get wrapped up in my own craziness and forget to step out side my box all of too often.

For the Festival we all decorated a witches hat to wear around while shopping and during the Musical, see I told you I have been getting my craft on lately.

My oldest daughter is being a peacock for halloween and I had a few left over feathers!  I am loving peacock feathers, they are so pretty and have such bright fun colors in them!
The tulle was also left over from her costume, I was pretty proud of myself, all I bought was the hat for $3 at Target, the rest I had around the house!

Here are a few pictures of the hat in action!!  Look at those fun witches we are sitting by!

Happy Monday EVERYONE!!

Bright and Cheery!

I always get excited when I get to do a custom order with a fun color.
I am a little hesitant to do a bright color on my own, however I do always love how they turn out.
This desk is for a friend of mine's daughter. They wanted it bright and cheery just like her room!
I think it will fit perfect!  I used glass knobs on this piece to add a little detail but I didn't want the knobs to compete with the fun color.

I used Pratt and Lambert's Myth of Old, I then used a brown glaze to bring out the details.  This piece top coated with a Poly Acrylic in satin!

I like to use Poly Acrylic on pieces that get more wear and tear.  A Poly offers a little more protection than a wax.

I love how bright and cheery this desk is, maybe it will make doing homework a little more fun?!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!

Tuesday's Tip: Keeping Glitter On....

I do love a little "bling" here and there!  I most certainly love the GLITTERED look!  I have a few random pieces through out my house that are covered in glitter, but I am not a huge fan of the trail of glitter these items seem to leave.  I have tired so many ways to try to get glitter to stay put, spray adhesive, mod podge, glue and so on and so on.  These adhesives work great to get the glitter on a piece but the glitter flakes off WAY too much!

I have finally found something that works!!!
So I thought I would share it at this weeks Tuesday's Tip.

A Slivery Blue Sofa Table

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  I spent the weekend crafting with my family.  It has been a long since I pulled out the craft supplies, I have missed crafting.  However I did forget how big of a mess I always manage to make!  I think I will stick with refinishing furniture so the mess stays outside!

I just finished this beautiful sofa table.  I refinished this and the Blue Hutch to match for a client.  She really wanted a light silvery blue, I always get a little worried when I try out a new color, it can look so different on furniture.  I am happy to report I LOVE how this color turned out.  It is a bit more blue than it appears in the pictures.

A Hint of Halloween in the Office

I don't usually get around to decorating for holidays, I have good intentions but time gets away from me and before I know it the holiday has come and gone!  Or if I do decorate the decorations seem to say up way too long.....but Halloween (and Christmas) are the exception!

A Blue Hutch

Yes, I am really addicted to hutches lately! I love how they turn out!
My client wanted a very light silver blue, we hit the nail on the head with this color.  I love how neutral and soft this color is.  It reminds me of a relaxing beach cottage.

I painted this hutch with Iceberg by Benjamin Moore and then used a brown glaze over the top.  I very lightly sand the edges before glazing.  This hutch was green before, I didn't want to chance any of the green showing through.
I then applied Poly Acrylic in Gloss for the top coat!

I love the fun paneling of this hutch as it adds so much character!

Who needs a little extra Holiday cash??!!

Tuesday's Tip: Eliminating Brush Stokes with Dry Brushing

I get asked all the time how to get rid of brush strokes.  There are a few different ways to help eliminate brush strokes

For today's tip I will show you have to dry brush.  Dry brushing is a great way to eliminate brush strokes without any added cost.  It is lots of fun too, it is one of my favorite ways to paint with a brush.

Here is how I dried brushed,

My first coat was white primer.  I did a very light coat with the grain of the wood.

I then took my top coat of latex paint and with a tiny bit of paint on the brush, and I mean tiny, I brushed with the grain, while the paint was still workable I went back over it against the grain to cover up my brush marks.  As you can see it gets rid of any harsh lines but still allows the white to show through.

When I first attempted dry brushing I was worried it was going to be very time consuming but I found it to be the opposite.  Since you are applying such a small amount of paint you have less runs!!

Don't forget to check back tomorrow at 8PM MST....I will be announcing a fun giveaway!

Happy Monday!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  I spent the weekend with the family celebrating my husbands birthday!  He isn't much of a birthday person but my oldest daughter and I love to make treats, so we couldn't let this pass by without trying something new.  I am not much a cook but I do love to decorate cupcakes and cookies.  Maybe because I love to eat them, I don't let myself have one very often, so when I can find an excuse I jump on it!
Can you tell what it is?  Yup, a golf course, well just one hole on a golf course!

I am putting together a fun giveaway with a few other bloggers that will be live at the Furniture and Paint Party this Wednesday at 8PM MST!!  Don't forget to come back and check it out!!

From Red to White

When I saw this dresser I loved the old style feel of it.  The only problem was....

It used to be red!!   Going white over red can be quite the task.
After many hours of sanding and stripping we were able to get most of the red off and the white went on very nicely!

I painted this dresser with Benjamin Moore's White Dove and then I used a water based brown glaze, which I watered down even more!  I wanted the glaze to be light but help show off the character of this piece.  I sealed it with a Poly Acrylic in Satin.

I love the details and the fun curves!

I hope everyone has fun plans for the weekend!
The hubby's birthday is Saturday, so it should be a fun weekend of celebration!
