How To Add Color to Your Hutch

Colors and style change fast these days.  But I admit I love color, so I really wanted to find a way to add color to my hutch without painting the whole thing a trendy color.  I am not opposed to trendy colors, in fact I kind of like them.  But when it takes hours/days to paint something it doesn't make much sense to paint it a color I am going to hate in a few years.

For this hutch I stuck with a nice soft cream latex for the body of the hutch.  

I added my color by removing the old back panel and replacing it with a new one. 

Here is how I did it:

First I popped the old back out.  I was careful to not destroy the old back so I could use is as a pattern for the new back.   

Next I cut my bead board down to size-You can buy 8'x4' sheets of bead board at Home Depot for around $20

After the bead board was cut down to size I painted the entire back with Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint in Duck Egg.  It took me 2 coats of paint.

Once the paint dried I used my staple gun to attach my new back in place.  

Now my white dishes have an awesome backdrop that really makes them pop!

And the best part?  When I am sick of this color I can easily pop that back out and repaint it!

DIY Chalky Finish Curio

 I was at a garage sale eyeing this piece when the lady selling it ran over and said..."lets wheel and deal, if you buy this I will run it out to your car right now!"  After a little negotiation on price I decided to take it home, and sure enough her and her son "ran" it right out to my car!

 As you can see the back has a mirror and there was glass on all sides of this piece as well as glass shelves.  

I took all the glass out and painted the frame with DecoArts Chalky Finish Paint.  This paint, much like chalk paint, can paint over just about anything without sanding.  However, I did sand this piece a little bit to make sure it was smooth and sand out the dings.

  I wanted this piece to be a soft blue so I mixed

4oz of Escape (blue)

10oz of Yesteryear (grey)

4oz of Everlasting (white)

Here is the coverage after 1 coat, and it stuck really great.  My mom also painted with this paint and loved how smooth it went on.  

I only had to paint this piece with 2 coats of paint!

After I painted the frame I cut out panels of bead board to fit in where the glass and the mirrors used to be!  I painted those with 2 coats of the blue paint as well.  

Once the blue paint had dried I used Everlasting (white) to dry brush the entire piece.  I love the texture dry brushing gives to a piece!  You can see my dry brushing tutorial here.

I also found this pretty appliqué to add to the front door.

After all of the paint was dry I seal this piece with a water based clear coat, after I applied the glaze to all the cracks.  I like to glaze after I top coat something as it allows me to have more working time with my glaze. 

Here she is all dolled up.

I couldn't be more happy with how cute this piece is.  I am so glad the lady at the garage sale was willing to wheel and deal!

Milk Paint Hutch

When I picked this hutch up from a garage sale I was a little worried about what was living in it.  It was caked with spider webs and years of dust, but details like that just can't be passed up!

And I am so glad I brought this beauty home.  Look how nice she cleaned up.

 I spray most of my furniture with a professional paint sprayer, but my spray booth only has 6 foot ceiling, so this monster of a piece wouldn't fit.  

I used General Finishes Seagull Grey Milk Paint.  I like to hand paint with milk paint, the brush stokes are minimal and it sands to a smooth easier than latex.  

I used General Finishes Antique While on the details to really make them pop.

I don't usually love water based top coats, as I don't think they are as durable.  However, the lady at the store talked me into General Finishes Polyurethane Water Based Top Coat......and I am converted!  It paints on so nicely leaving minimal brush marks and my children even put it to test by rubbing their sticky popsicle covered hands all over it, and to my surprise it wiped up so nicely!  The popsicle juice bubbled up nicely on the top and didn't sink into the paint at all.  Leave it to my children to test something out for us!

Pallet Top Sofa Table

I have made a goal for myself this week to blog everyday except Sunday.  I have had this goal in the back of my head for quite sometime now but every week something seems to come up or I am feeling burnt out by the end of the week so I go to bed early instead of blogging.  This week I have planned out my posts, so lets hope all goes as planned, I know it sounds strange but this will be a huge milestone for me.  With 3 kids under 6 some days are consumed with being a mommy.  At times I get frustrated I didn't check as many things off my to do list as I had hoped, but I keep reminding myself, if I loose sight of what is really important, my family, when it is all said and done I will be terribly sad.

Let's kick this week off with one of my favorite transformations yet!  Remember when I blogged about some awesome finds I found a few weeks ago, including this sofa table?  Take a good look at her before......

Retro Record Player Turned Shabby Chic Bench

I do have a bit of a competitive side so I jumped at the chance to be part of this months Fab Furniture Flippin' Contest.  When I heard that this months theme was Shabby Chic Storage I had just the project in mind.  Plus, it gave me a little motivation to get this record player out of my garage, which had been in there for at least a year!

If you have ever torn apart an old record player you know how long it takes.  These things were built so well it is a very long process to hallow them out, we are talking hours and hours, but it was worth it!

I wanted to make this record player into a bench to sit behind our computer, so I took off the old retro legs and added new bunt feet, making it the perfect height for a bench and adding a more shabby chic feel.

I pulled the record player out and lined the box with bead board for some awesome added storage for our office.  I think I will hide our printer in there!

The cubbies that used to house the speakers have also been lined with bead board and found these cute crates at Home Goods to slide right in.  Perfect fit!! 

 Since this piece is going in my office I wanted it to match the other pieces I had already redone.  I sprayed this bench with a custom mixed latex paint (I know I always say that) and then antiqued it with sand paper and glaze to bring out all the details.  I also top coated with with a spar urethane to help it hold up better against my kids.  As I imagine they will be climbing on it too!

Vintage Fold Down Desk

My sister found this desk for me at a garage sale and sent me pictures.  I had been wanting to get my hands on one of these for sometime so I bought it.  Since I had just seen pictures of it I was a little worried about the condition when it arrived.  It was missing a leg, luckily I found the missing piece in the drawer.  And as you can see the scratches and dings were very deep.  I wanted to salvage as much of the wood as I could...and so the stripping and sanding began.  I was pleasantly surprised at how easy most of the scratches came out!  Are you ready to see the finished piece.....

And here she is all dolled up!  

I am so glad I was able to salvage the wood, the grain is so rich.

The wood is stained with Miniwaxes Early American and top coated with a spar urethane in semi-gloss.  I love the contrast of the painted letter shelves.

This is painted with a custom mixed cream, I know I always say that, I am sorry :(  I then glazed the painted part and sealed it with a Spar Urethane in Satin.

I am just in love with this little desk!!
